Some light spoilers below but you’ll be fine:

Twenty-four very quick years have passed since Stan Lee’s *Spider-Man* first appeared on the big screen. In that time there have been three different actors to put on the mask and eight more movies to follow. Destin Daniel Cretton’s *Spider-Man Brand New Day* is the most recent and it absolutely rocks. Tom Holland’s fourth installment as the web slinger brings something different.

It’s Bold.

Unlike the others it reaches a different level, for years we’ve seen Spidey’s antagonist get mixed around and most of the time it works out fine. The thing is if you know the villain, odds are you know the story. Brand New Day does something totally original. Obviously it helps that Marvel is gigantic (and has a larger agenda) so there’s no shortage of characters to introduce. As fans we’re thankful for that so we don’t get a third rendition of the Green Goblin

On top of the fresh faces, we literally grew up with him.

Life was happening to us and every few years we’d casually disappear to the theater and watch Tom Holland be a superhero. The teenager watching Captain America Civil War ten years ago went to watch Brand New Day as an adult with some parts being pretty relatable. Maybe not the saving the world part, or webs coming out of you. But things like death, loss, and doing hard things are all parallels to real life.

As far as the MCU goes, hell yes. Not only does it rock as a stand-alone movie but it moves the needle on the bigger picture, something we’ve so desperately missed. When the MCU went through its *quantity over quality* phase there were so many installments that left you feeling “okay that was kinda fun but now what?” It’s simple but also really refreshing to actually feel them building something again.

Lastly, it’s destroying.

Spider-Man Brand New Day did $932 million globally on opening weekend. The second highest global opening weekend of all time (to Endgame of course). It’s not all about the box office but with numbers like that it’s hard not to mention them. At the end of the day the numbers and vibes are just more ammo in Frank’s clip to keep making *amazing* Spider-Man movies.
